dMAT Germany 2026: The New APS Test Every Indian Master's Applicant Must Know
If a Master's in Germany is on your list for 2027, there's a new step in your paperwork that didn't exist a year ago — and getting it wrong can cost you an entire intake.
It's called the dMAT, and APS India rolled it out in mid-2026. Most students still haven't heard of it. This is what it is, who it affects, and — just as importantly — who doesn't have to take it at all.

What is the dMAT?
The dMAT (Digital Master Test) is a standardised academic aptitude test introduced by APS India as a new, additional part of the APS documentation for certain Master's applicants.
To be clear about what it is not: it does not replace APS document verification, it does not replace your university grades, and it does not replace the recognition of your degree in the anabin database. It's an extra element that now sits alongside everything you were already submitting. The test itself is administered by g.a.s.t. (the Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development), while APS India continues to verify your academic documents as before.
The catch is simple: if you fall into an affected group, APS cannot issue your certificate until your dMAT result has been submitted and checked. No APS certificate, no German student visa. That's why this matters.
Who has to take the dMAT?
The dMAT applies to Master's applicants from India whose previous degree falls within one of these fields:
Engineering
Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics
Business / Management
If that sounds like a large share of Indian students heading to Germany — it is. Engineering and business graduates make up a huge portion of applicants, which is exactly why this change is so significant.
It becomes a required part of the APS documentation for applications tied to the Summer Semester 2027 intake and every intake after it.
Interdisciplinary degrees — think Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Data Science, Industrial Engineering, FinTech — sit in a grey zone. Whether they're affected depends on the official list of fields published by APS India, so if your degree straddles categories, check that list before assuming anything.
Who is exempt?
This is the part worth reading twice. The dMAT does not apply to:
Bachelor's programme applicants
PhD applicants
Applicants whose previous degree is outside the affected fields
Applicants entering through officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university partnership programmes
That last exemption is the one that changes the game for many students — and we'll come back to it.
There are also transitional exemptions: if you completed your APS online registration or shipped your complete APS documents before 29 June 2026, or you already hold your APS certificate, you're not required to take the dMAT for that application.
The dates you can't miss
For the first dMAT cycle in India, the schedule is tight:
29 June 2026 — Registration opens
15 September 2026 — Registration deadline
26 September 2026 — Test date
12 October 2026 — Certificates available online
Test centres are spread across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Chandigarh and more. Seats are first-come, first-served through g.a.s.t. — APS India can't reserve one for you, so if your preferred centre fills up, you take what's left.
What it costs — and the hidden cost
The test fee is €150, paid to g.a.s.t. at registration. That's the number on paper.
The real cost is timing. Because APS holds your certificate until your dMAT result is in, a missed registration window or a booked-out test centre doesn't just delay one document — it can push your admission back by a full semester. For a student who has already lined up an offer, a blocked account and a visa appointment, that's the difference between starting in 2027 and waiting for the next intake.
The smarter route: a dMAT-free admission
Here's what most students miss while they're busy worrying about test dates.
If you enter Germany through a confirmed university partnership or double-degree programme, you are exempt from the dMAT. No extra test. No extra €150. No timeline risk. You still complete your APS document verification — but the new aptitude test simply doesn't apply to you.
The reason this isn't common knowledge is that it isn't a route you can easily assemble on your own. The exemption requires official confirmation from the partner institution or programme coordinator, submitted with your APS documentation. In other words, it depends on having a genuine partnership route in place — not just naming one.

What to do now
If you're planning a Master's in Germany for Summer 2027 or later, take three steps this week:
Check whether your degree field is affected — engineering, business/management, or commerce/finance graduates almost certainly are.
Check your anabin status — confirm your previous university and degree are recognised, because the dMAT changes nothing here.
Explore whether a partnership route fits you — because if it does, the entire dMAT question disappears.
The dMAT is new, the rules around exemptions are easy to misread, and a single missed date carries a real cost. Don't register for a test you may not even need before you've checked which route is actually right for you.
